Fuel rebates widened 16 Jun 2004
Farmers will benefit from the Federal Government's new energy and environment plan. The plan provides expanded coverage of the on-road diesel and alternative fuel rebates, which will reduce farmers' transport costs. Rebates on diesel fuel excise are expected to be available for all off-road uses and for most fuels, not just diesel.
The National Farmers' Federation welcomed the initiatives as helping to reduce costs and red tape for farmers. NFF CEO Anna Cronin said the federation has been calling for an extension of the off-road rebates for some time. She said under the old rules there were restrictions on what uses of diesel could attract a rebate of fuel excise. While diesel used in harvesters and tractors was fairly straightforward, other uses, such as in power generators, could not be claimed. There were also major problems in distinguishing between private and business use of farm vehicles.
