Rural Queensland 'dudded'
17 Jun 2004

Rural Queensland says it has lost its voice in the Beattie Labor Government, following Tuesday's Budget announcement of big spending on infrastructure in the state's south-east. Rural lobby groups have accused Premier Beattie of "throwing a few crumbs" at regional Queensland.

Larry Acton, president of AgForce, said the Government has ignored people living west of the Great Dividing Range, particularly those in areas that are still drought-afflicted.

Canegrowers' GM Ian Ballantyne said he hoped agriculture is not losing its voice, after the Government made cuts to the Department of Primary Industries.

Mike Horan, the Opposition's spokesman for primary industries, said rural Queensland had been "dudded". There was a $2.37 billion surplus in the Budget but it was not used on regional areas, he stated.

Australian Financial Review, 17/6/04.
