New beef quality gene marker identified

A CSIRO Livestock Industries team has discovered a new beef quality gene marker for marbling. This will help cattle producers more accurately predict the genetic potential of their animals to produce better tasting and more valuable beef. The discovery is the most recent in a series of gene marker identifications for marbling and tenderness which have been commercialised as GeneSTAR marbling and GeneSTAR tenderness.
Marbling is a valuable trait in markets such as Japan and the US, as it improves the eating quality of the meat and is the major factor in price determination. When the new gene marker is commercialised it will, in combination with current and future marbling markers, increase the chances of identifying cattle with a high genetic potential for the trait.
The scientific team is also aiming to identify gene markers for parasite resistance and net feed efficiency, which could be delivered as additions to the other tests.
