Ethanol blueprint to boost sugar industry
22 Jun 2004

All government cars in Queensland will use ethanol-based fuel under a new plan to boost the sugar industry announced by Premier Beattie. Currently, just 17 outlets sell ethanol-based fuel in the state, but this will be increased as part of a marketing plan to boost ethanol acceptance.

Under the Qld Government's 34-point plan, the state's 12,900-strong car fleet will be required to use locally produced ethanol-based fuel. Local government councils will also be encouraged to use ethanol-based E10 fuel for vehicle fleets.

The Qld Government's fuel contract is due for renewal this year and will be used as a bargaining tool with fuel companies to encourage ethanol use. Other points of the plan are hosting an international ethanol conference next year, working with vehicle manufacturers, exploring export opportunities and promoting the suitability of ethanol with motor vehicle registration renewal notices.
