Dairy farmers milk it for all it's worth
29 Jun 2004

A survey of Australia's dairy farmers has found that although the drought forced many into debt or out of the industry, 59 per cent plan to increase production in the next year, providing there is timely rain. The survey was funded by Dairy Australia and was the largest of its kind in the industry, supported by more than 50 dairy groups.

Australian Dairy Farmers said the results show that the decline in production is coming to an end. The report indicated milk production would return to its highest level by 2006-2007.

Dairy Australia has engaged representatives to meet with farmers to discuss business plans and help them reduce debt by focusing on what they can control, such as pasture management. The service will begin next month.
