UK cheers Aussie wine 15 Jul 2004
Australian wines have out-muscled French wines in the top ten brands sold in Britain. Australian wines took six of the top 10 places in the UK market in a list dominated by new world wines, according to AC Nielsen.
Hardys is Britain's biggest seller while Jacob's Creek takes third place. California's Blossom Hill was the second most popular.
Hardys said over the last 10 years per capita consumption of wine has doubled in Britain. Over the same period, Australia came along with consumer-friendly wines with brand names that were easy to understand and pronounce.
Of all wines not drunk in pubs or restaurants, Australian wines now take up 23.8 per cent of the UK market, with French wines on 19.2 per cent, followed by the US (13.5 per cent), South Africa and Italy (9.9 per cent each).
The top 10 brands are: Hardys (Australia), Blossom Hill (US), Jacob's Creek (Australia), E and J Gallo (US), Stowells (various), Kumala (South Africa), Lindemans (Australia), Banrock Station (Australia), Rosemount (Australia), Wolf Blass (Australia).
