Tasmanian wins farmer award 16 Jul 2004
A 29-year-old Tasmanian livestock agent, David Finlay, has won the 2004 National Young Farmer of the year title. Mr Finlay had to draft a mob of sheep, fence in a high-pressure situation and back a tractor through an obstacle course to achieve top honours in the competition.
Queensland grazier Kevin Brennan came a close second, while Victorian farmer Ben Morris came third. The awards were announced at the Australian Rural Youth convention held in Dalby, Queensland, on Monday.
In the public speaking component of the competition, Mr Finlay said fine-tuning the National Livestock Identification Scheme is just one of the major issues facing rural communities today. He also mentioned water, salinity and the increasing cost of land.
Mr Finlay will represent Australian Rural Youth for the next 12 months. He won $9,500 in cash and prizes, including attendance at a number of agricultural courses.
