Port, sherry down the drain
19 Jul 2004

The Australian wine industry plans to drop the terms "port" and "sherry" so a wine trade deal can be sealed with the European Union. Changing to alternative names will mean Australia complies with EU demands to stop the use of names outside their geographic regions. The Winemakers' Federation of Australia said the name change is necessary if the industry wants deals with the EU.

The industry is currently looking at alternative names. "Port" may become "Australian fortified red" and "sherry" may be named "Australian fortified white". McWilliams Wines plans to have bottles with those terms in shops by the end of this year. McWilliams' CEO said the new names could help increase sales of Australian fortified wines, which have been decreasing. It could give them a point of difference and allow local makers to piggy-back off the success of Australian wine brands overseas.
