Love a good stoush: farmers' group notches up 25 years 19 Jul 2004
The National Farmers' Federation was formed 25 years ago in Canberra. Over that time, few organisations have been involved in as many historic disputes as the top rural lobby group. They have ranged from the wide-comb shearing dispute in 1982, Dollar Sweets (1985), Mudginberri meatworks (1986), the waterfront dispute (1998), also Wik and, recently, water.
The Prime Minister told an anniversary dinner that the NFF championed opening up the financial system, tax reform and removing high tariffs, but its greatest impact has been in the arena of industrial relations reform.
The prominent role of resources issues today represents a major change in the direction of NFF over the years. Just last month, the federation achieved a victory on water. Current president Peter Corish said he wants to see the same principles of the water victory applied to other resource issues, such as land clearing.
