Citrus crisis squeezes $3.6m from farm 20 Jul 2004
Pacific Century, the company at the centre of Queensland's citrus canker crisis, said yesterday it has already lost $3.6 million worth of trees and crops. MD David King defended the company's conduct since the disease erupted a fortnight ago on Evergreen Farms at Emerald. He said Pacific Century has fully co-operated with the Department of Primary Industries and denied Minister Henry Palaszczuk's claims it had sought to obstruct the Government with a court injunction to halt tree clearing.
Yesterday, DPI officials poisoned another 40,000 citrus trees, ahead of their being uprooted and burnt.
Mr King, son of the company's owner Philip Cea, insisted that the company was not responsible for the canker infestation. All of Evergreen's citrus material was sourced from Australian suppliers, he stated.
