RSPCA joins wild dog fight 21 Jul 2004
The Victorian Farmers' Federation has been joined by the RSPCA in its battle against wild dogs. RSPCA president Hugh Wirth has joined the call to State and Federal Governments for more to be done to solve the problem. He said the RSPCA has become involved because it's question of animal rights: wild dogs inflict horrific injuries on their victims, and cause emotional and financial trauma to farmers. Dr Wirth said it's clear that current strategies to curb feral dogs are proving unsuccessful.
At last week's annual VFF conference, wild dogs were a hot topic, with several resolutions passed calling for increased funding for doggers and the maintenance of exclusion fences. Delegates also demanded that land baiting be increased and aerial baiting be re-introduced. Farmers said they are increasingly worried about their safety.
