Alliance fights for grain
21 Jul 2004

The chicken meat, pork, dairy, egg and feedlot industries have formed a new alliance, Livestock Feed Grain Users' Group, to fight for future grain security. LFGUG members are the Australian Lot Feeders' Association, Australian Pork Ltd, Australian Chicken Meat Federation, Australian Dairy Farmers and the Australian Egg Industry Association.

LFGUG are seeking a fairer deal from grain producers and government to avoid shortages and high feed prices, particularly during drought. They also want improved access to imports and grain diversions from export pipelines during severe drought, as well as tax breaks for boosting grain storage.

During the recent drought, intensive livestock producers were hit by feed shortages, with grain prices exceeding $350 a tonne. In addition, quarantine protocols limited timely access to imports. They also suspected AWB held back grain, waiting for better export returns rather than sell it domestically.
