Reprieve for agricultural research
23 Jul 2004

The NSW Government has announced a moratorium on the planned closure of four rural research stations, as well as promising an additional $25 million for agricultural research over the next two years.

The Government's five-month moratorium comes after NSW farmers threatened to run an intensive lobbying campaign against the proposed closures of the research stations at Deniliquin, Temora, Grafton and Gosford.

Ian Macdonald, the NSW Agriculture Minister, said he would defer the decision on the closures until local communities and staff had been consulted. The additional $25 million in funds will come from the sale of government-owned land which is not being used for agricultural research purposes.

Australian Financial Review, 23/7/04.
