Lamb gets the chop
26 Jul 2004

Australia's national dish, lamb, is in danger of pricing itself off the dinner table. A whole lamb for the freezer costs about $172, while cutlets are priced at $32 a kilogram. Many butchers say they're stocking less than half the usual amount of lamb because people won't buy it at current prices.

The Sheepmeat Council's Bernie O'Sullivan said there's been a 50 per cent jump in the price of lamb at butchers and supermarkets in the past three years. It affects demand, though, as shoppers won't put it in their trolleys.

But while farmers are getting record prices for lamb at the saleyards, they're just playing catch-up financially after the drought drastically reduced flock numbers.

The Daily Telegraph, 26/7/04.
