CBH takes knife to WA terminals 27 Jul 2004
Co-operative Bulk Handling has embarked on a plan to rationalise its grain receival network which will mean a reduction from 196 sites to 60 mega-sites over the next 10 years. CBH chairman Robert Sewell said yesterday the existing system is too costly to maintain but he conceded the proposal would spark complaints from farmers who will have to travel further at harvest to deliver their grain. He said some farmers are already choosing to deliver grain to bigger and more efficient sites which are open longer hours, even though they're closer to other bins.
CBH has already identified the sites which will become mega-sites by 2020, when WA's grain crop is expected to be close to 25 million tonnes. The potential mega-sites have not yet been announced. Mr Sewell said the rest of the network will be made up of secondary sites, to be maintained for the immediate future, and satellite sites, which are near the end of their useful lives.
