Aussie wool to ride international clothes racks
27 Jul 2004

Australian wool will be back on world clothes racks following a $20 million campaign to boost sales. Australian Wool Innovation announced it would spend the funds over the next four years to build wool's profile, as part of a wider program that involves designers and garment makers. It comes as a result of shrinking demand for wool clothes, in competition with cheaper artificial fibres.

A major part of the plan is to create new forms of wool, then work with designers and retailers to get garments on clothes racks, particularly in the northern hemisphere. One type of wool being explored is a trans-seasonal blend which could extend the season for wool women's wear into Spring from Winter. Wool will be mixed with other fibres for improved handling and colour.

AWI will also increase funding for products already in the market, such as Woolfleece.
