Smart traps hope on wild dogs
28 Jul 2004

The Victorian Department of Primary Industries is examining "smart" traps that can alert a dogger once a wild dog is caught. The traps are fitted with electronic alerts that signal the dogger kilometres away once they have been set off. This means the dogger only has to attend to these traps, rather than spending hundreds of hours checking traps over large areas. Response times are faster also, so the trap is more humane.

In Queensland meanwhile, scientists are experimenting with poison collars fitted to livestock to beat wild dogs. The 1080-filled collar fits around a goat or sheep's neck and when the animal is attacked a bladder is punctured, releasing the poison into the dog's mouth. The collar is a last resort where conventional baiting or trapping has failed. It's especially effective in killing rogue dogs.
