The NSW Farmers' Association claims that "penny-pinching" bureaucrats have turned down a desperate plea from farmers to fund an additional trapper for three years to control wild dogs in southern NSW. The plea was made at a crisis meeting over the issue on July 22. But the National Parks and Wildlife Service agreed to fund an additional trapper for only six months.
The association's Rob Anderson said he's getting reports of wild dog problems from a much wider area than previously regarded as dog "hot spots". The association wants NPWS to fund an additional trapper for three years around Adaminaby near Kosciuszko National Park. Farmers in this area say many wild dogs are the offspring of hunting breeds, such as Rhodesian ridgebacks, bull mastiffs, Rottweilers, Irish wolf hounds and Alsatians, combined with the dingo. They're not only killing large numbers of lambs, but also native animals.
Mr Anderson said it's difficult to believe NPWS could not afford this and the association will keep up pressure for funding.
