US mad cow puts Australia in the black

Japan is Australia's most valuable export market for red meat: in 2003-2004, the combined total of beef, offal, processed beef, lamb and mutton exported to Japan was $2.05 billion - up 31 per cent on 2002-2003. In 2003-2004, Japan was our largest export market for beef, offal and processed beef products by value, and the third largest lamb and mutton market.
The value of beef exports to Japan rose 25 per cent to $1.75 billion in 2003-2004, while volumes increased by 19 per cent. Lamb exports rose in value to $50 million, up 27 per cent. The value of offal and processed beef increased the most, with offal exports to Japan up 145 per cent to $150 million and processed beef exports up 138 per cent to $56 million.
Meat & Livestock Australia said the main factors for the increases were the absence of the US from the Japanese market and growing consumer demand. MLA said there is no indication that US beef exports to Japan will resume this year and even when they do, the market for US products will be smaller.
