More bad news for SA, Vic grains farmers 18 Aug 2004
Farmers in western Victoria and South Australia, who have already battled through a two-year drought, have been told to expect below average rainfall this Spring. Grains producers in Australia's south-east are likely to miss out on the big harvests predicted for parts of WA and northern NSW.
The Bureau of Meteorology says many parts of S-E Australia have a less than 20 per cent chance of receiving average rainfall in this growing season. Across central to south-east SA, north-west Victoria and the far south-west of NSW, the chances of above median rainfall for Spring are below 40 per cent, according to the Bureau. The chances are closer to even elsewhere in Australia.
On the price front the forecasts are also disappointing, with AWB again downgrading its estimated returns for the wheat harvest due to the northern hemisphere's excellent crop.
