SA farm safety fund dries up
18 Aug 2004

Funding for a vital South Australian farm safety program will be cut next month. The move comes despite a mounting death toll and follows the death of a 36-year-old man on a Cummins farm last week. His death is the third fatal farming accident on Eyre Peninsula in 11 months.

The Farmsafe project, supported by the South Australian Farmers' Federation and funded by WorkCover, ends next month. WorkCover says it only ever provides seed funding for programs for short periods. The Federation says the latest accident brings home the message that farms can be dangerous places to work, and it's vitally important farmers are educated about reducing the risks. The Federation said it's unacceptable that Farmsafe is stopped in SA due to lack of funding.

Farmsafe SA said SA would then be the only state without a Farmsafe program. A meeting will be held late this month to address the issue.

The Advertiser, 18/8/04.
