Beef on a stellar run
19 Aug 2004

Buyer confidence in store cattle rose to new highs last week at Ballarat, when heavy, grown steers averaged more than 200 cents/kilogram liveweight. The top pen of Angus steers fetched $1,020. Some agents rate this Winter as one of the best selling periods for store cattle they've seen, with the strong demand driven by good rain, high prime beef and feedlot prices and a shortage of stock.

A Meat and Livestock Australia analyst said while he couldn't speculate on "how much is too much" to pay for store cattle, the outlook for beef sales over the coming few months is very healthy.

Weekly Times, 18/8/04, page 1.
