Plan to let sugar cane farmers sell zone rights 20 Aug 2004
Sugar farmers would be rewarded for keeping their land under cane in a scheme involving transferable development rights, which is being proposed to the Queensland Government. The plan would encourage viable sugar cane farmers to stay on while allowing controlled development on less viable farms that are sold. The proposal is being put to Government as a solution for stalled development in regional areas and overcrowding on the Sunshine and Gold Coasts.
The plan would see local and State governments granting TDRs to zoned agricultural land. Farmers who stay on their farms could raise money by selling TDRs to developers for housing and industrial projects.
The scheme would allow communities to retain green zones, but not at the cost of individual property owners.
The Queensland Government has to date opposed residential development taking over cane land, but a softening of the policy is now expected.
