Farmers fight for fresh, clean image
23 Aug 2004

Sunraysia farmers say the Victorian Government's plan to build a toxic waste dump in their district would undermine the Government's own marketing campaign about Sunraysia's "fresh, clean and safe" produce. That reputation would be destroyed if the dump goes ahead.

The district's farmers are planning a three-day demonstration of their produce in Parliament House tomorrow.

A dry-fruit producer is so concerned she has put aside plans to invest a further $8 million in her orchards and vineyards for at least two years. Landowners with sheep and grain properties next to the proposed dump site have vowed to lie in front of bulldozers to prevent its going ahead.

But the Victorian Major Works Minister, Peter Batchelor, claimed that the State Government "values and treasures" the horticulture and agricultural products coming from the region and would do nothing to harm that. He stated "lies and exaggerations" are being circulated for political reasons.

The Age, 23/8/04.
