Vic forestry boss unveils expansion plan 23 Aug 2004
The Victorian Association of Forest Industries, headed by former greens lobbyist Tricia Caswell, has unveiled Vision 2025, a strategy that could double the size of the industry without using any more native forest. The plan details expansion proposals through the more efficient use of native forest, new hardwood plantations and the provision of environmental services.
Ms Caswell told a Gippsland timber forum last week that the forestry industry has to resolve a number of critical issues to grow sustainably and reverse its decline - issues such as harvesting in old-growth forest, catchment water yield, aesthetics, developing plantations and extracting value for money from native forests.
Ms Caswell said there's a change in the air, with WWF Australia and other green groups putting forward proposals for a sustainable Tasmanian forestry industry. These are signs that there are shifts in the way industry is being seen by those who have been extremely critical in the past.
