Bush flights slip net 24 Aug 2004
Airline passengers from 146 regional airports to capital cities won't have to face compulsory security screening, despite a $48 million Federal Government upgrade to the nation's airports security. The regional airports will only get hand-held monitoring equipment for use in times of heightened security alerts. Closed-circuit TV will also be tested at several regional airports.
Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson said the 146 regional airports' passengers would not be covered by the compulsory screening as the Government could not try to cover off every eventuality. The approach is based on appropriate risk, he said.
Labor agreed screening at all regional airports would be impractical, but said it's essential that passengers from larger centres are screened as many of these flights are bound for capital cities. Labor cited airports such as Burnie, Devonport, Port Lincoln, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga and Bundaberg.
