Olive oil's day in the limelight 24 Aug 2004
At the Sydney Showgrounds Members' Stand yesterday, nine judges presided over olive oil judgment day at the Sydney Royal Food Show. Fifty-three Australian-grown oils were sniffed and tasted, with only one gold medal awarded - the first for several years.
The winner will be announced today; it's a commercial grower. The chairman of the judges, Grahame Latham, said a gold medal can increase the retail price by 20 per cent or more.
The fine food show was initiated by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW to showcase the best of Australian products. Today the focus will be on oysters (unshucked, unwashed, both Angasi and Pacific), and breads, cakes and pies. Tomorrow deli meats will be judged.
