Farmers will fight policy rules 25 Aug 2004
South Australia's farmers have embarked on a battle against the National Competition Policy in an attempt to gain fairer rules for export industries. The South Australian Farmers' Federation has kicked off the campaign with an advertisement in the national press. President John Lush said it's the biggest issue he's faced in his time as leader. The agricultural sector is fighting for the survival of its rural and regional communities, he said, and they stand to lose a great deal if the National Competition Council continues to target export industries using pure economic ideology to guide its decisions.
The campaign follows widespread concern that the NCC is targeting many agricultural industries for restructuring. Up to two million jobs are at risk. Mr Lush the issue is critical to SA farmers as the state exports up to 80 per cent of what it produces, and if it can't export it can't produce for local markets. Specific industries feeling the policy's effects, or about to, are barley, wheat, dairy, chicken and eggs.
