Farmers back channel deepening in bay 25 Aug 2004
The Victorian Farmers' Federation has backed channel deepening in Port Phillip Bay, in order to ensure the future of the state's agricultural sector. VFF president Paul Weller said the Port of Melbourne's long-term competitiveness is in jeopardy unless channel deepening takes place, and that most of Victoria's $7.6 billion of food and fibre exports go through the port.
Over the past five years exports have increased significantly and will continue to do so. But already 30 per cent of the vessels using the Port of Melbourne can't load to capacity as the channels aren't deep enough, Mr Weller said.
