Shops urged to list farm prices 26 Aug 2004
The Victorian Farmers' Federation has started a campaign to encourage supermarkets to place farm gate prices next to the shop prices of milk and vegetables. The VFF voted to lobby the State Government after the idea was approved at last month's annual conference.
Colac VFF member Doug Chant suggested the idea and believes consumers would be shocked to find out how little of the final price goes to the farmer. Store prices keep going up but farmers get less and less money. Mr Chant says forcing stores to display both prices would bring transparency into the market and allow smaller shop keepers to compete with larger supermarkets. He used the example of milk, which leaves his property at 24 cents a litre and is then sold in shops at $1.20 a litre.
Mr Chant doesn't believe, however, that supermarkets would go through with the idea, but said the campaign would draw attention to the issue.
