Farmers eye oil for poll
30 Aug 2004

Farmers worried about new oil price highs as they passed the $US50-a-barrel mark last week - and some market analysts are starting to tip a $US60 barrel price. National Farmers' Federation vice-president Charles Burke says the NFF will now look at fuel costs as part of its federal election strategy. We will be looking at what the Government can do to help, he said. Farmers spend $1.5 billion a year on fuel and even small price rises add millions to this total.

ANZ Bank said oil prices should stay above $US45 a barrel for at least the next six months. Infochoice said last Friday that the rising cost of oil is now the biggest question mark hanging over Australia's economy.

The Australian, 30/8/04.
