France sues winemaker over 'misleading' label

French winemakers and industry representatives have launched legal action against Australian grower Taltarni Vineyards over the use of the word Tache on its sparkling wines. The Institut National des Appellations d'Origine, which administers France's wine industry, and two guilds have initiated proceedings in the Federal Court to get Taltarni's label removed.
The claim says Taltarni's Brut Tache copies a French wine variety called La Tache. Such geographical names are protected European Union laws and recognised by Australia.
Taltarni's Brut Tache is made from northern Tasmanian grapes, but LaTache wines may only be made from specific grape varieties in France. The Taltarni label is said to be "false" and "misleading".
