Another corker year for wine exports 8 Sep 2004
Australia's wine exports soared 14 per cent to 595 million litres in the year to August, while value was up 6 per cent to $2.58 billion. But Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation figures also show that despite the value increase, the average price per litre was down 7 per cent to $4.34 a bottle.
Canada has replaced the US as the biggest contributor to value growth; the value of shipments to Canada grew $31 million compared with the US, up $24 million. Almost $212 million worth of Australian wine, or 34,833,951 litres, was shipped to Canada - up 17.1 per cent on the previous 12 months.
But the US was Australia's largest customer in terms of value, and accounted for $901.1 million, or nearly 35 per cent of Australia's wine export dollars - up 2.8 per cent. The UK is still the biggest customer in terms of volume. Exports to the UK reached 229 million litres - up 9 per cent, and accounting for nearly 40 per cent of Australian wine export litres.
