Industry tries to keep US beef at bay
8 Sep 2004

The Australian beef industry is working to consolidate its $2 billion share of the Japanese market, as the US presses to be allowed to return. The US may re-enter the Japanese market as early as 2005, ending a golden year for Australian exporters which was won almost entirely at the expense of the US.

The Australian industry has begun a campaign to woo Japan's consumers, to ward off expected aggressive action by the US when it returns. The buzz phrase is "food safety".

Queensland's Premier, Peter Beattie, emphasised the NLIS scheme when he visited Tokyo's Seiyu supermarket recently, saying every animal will have to have a tag "so as it can be identified from when it is born to when it is eaten". Seiyu's shoppers are highly sought-after, as they pay up to $240 a kilo for the finest grades of beef.
