Coalition diverts state grants into water works
14 Sep 2004

The coalition government proposes to establish a $2 billion fund for water conservation. The coalition would divert $1.6 billion in payments earmarked for the states under national competition policy to help pay for the plan. The water fund will subsidise projects that improve river flows, desalinate water, recycle storm water, reuse grey water, better manage sewerage, store water more efficiently and design water-efficient houses. Some money would be earmarked to develop national water standards.
