Drought dries up dairy profits
16 Sep 2004

Profits of Australian dairy farms fell by 80 per cent during the drought over the last two years, research by ABARE for Dairy Australia, the industry's research, trade and marketing arm has found. ABARE found that revenues from milk production fell by an average 20 per cent between 2001 and 2003, and the study warned they were down even further in 2003/04. ABARE said that a fall in fodder costs had helped offset the reduction in milk revenues. As a result, ABARE expects a “modest increase” in dairy business profits in most states this year.
