States bail out of deal on water
17 Sep 2004

State governments say they will no longer match funds for the National Water Initiative, after the states learned the federal government would reduce general state grants to fund the federal government’s own contribution. The initiative aims to direct $2 billion in funding to projects to reduce waste of water resources in major agricultural areas. The national water initiative was agreed at the Council of Australian Government's meeting in June.
