Smart managers milk richer profits from dairy farms 20 Sep 2004
A study commissioned by Dairy Australia found that good farm management could double dairy farm output and more than quadruple farm profits. In 2001/02, the average profit of the top 25 per cent of seasonal dairy farms was $147,000, while the bottom 25 per cent lost an average $27,000. In year-round herds, the top performers averaged a net annual profit of $82,000 compared with a net annual average loss of $65,000 for the poorest. Dairy Australia’s economic research co-ordinator John O'Connor said farm size had less influence on returns than farm management. O'Connor said there was no great difference in the average farm size - less than 20 hectares, in the case of seasonal farms - between the bottom and top performers.
