Leasehold conversion prospects multiply
20 Sep 2004

The New South Wales government is willing to allow the conversion of much more land from leasehold to freehold than first thought. In June, the state government introduced legislation to enable the conversion of 11,500 perpetual leases for three per cent of their value, rather than the eight per cent or nine per cent the Farmers Association said happened in the past. Previously, it was understood that the sale covered about a million hectares, but the area under consideration is about 3.5 million hectares, or more than four per cent of the area of NSW.
