Beef sales may slump if Japan lifts US ban
21 Sep 2004

Australian beef exports to Japan are likely to drop next year, if Japan lifts its ban on American beef imports by the end of the year. ABARE forecast a seven per cent fall in import prices in 2004-5 for Australian beef exporters, and a five per cent fall in volume. Japan blocked US beef exports to Japan in late 2003 amid a scare over mad cow disease. ABARE said the outlook for Australian beef exports to Japan was dependent on a series of meetings between Japanese and US agricultural authorities over testing methods and surveillance measures for American cattle.
