Aussies cling to prime cut of Japan’s beef market
23 Sep 2004

The stand off between Japan and the US over Japan’s ban on US beef will help Australian exporters, with exports of Australian beef to Japan likely to surpass $2.2 billion this year. With no competition from US exporters, Australian beef accounts for about 90 per cent of Japanese imports. Meat and Livestock Australia chief market analyst Peter Weeks said the impact on Australian sales of an end to the ban on US beef would be moderate. Weeks said that even with a return of US beef to the market early next year, he expected Australian beef exports to Japan to settle at 305,000 tonnes in 2005.
