China looks abroad for grain 24 Sep 2004
Agricultural exports to China from Australia for broadacre farm products such as wheat are certain to increase, mainly due to a shortage of arable land in China as cities expand and incomes rise. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Research Economics says there was no growth at all between 1995 and 2002 in the average annual growth rate of China's production of grain crops. Demand for animal feed grains such as wheat and corn is expected to grow as urban consumers demand more poultry and pork. China has so far managed to increase its production of maize for stockfeed but prefers to meet its wheat demands through imports.
