Markets code a voluntary affair
27 Sep 2004

Fruit and vegetable growers are wrangling with the federal government over a new code for dealing with wholesalers. The growers want a mandatory code but the government says a voluntary code is sufficient. National Farmers' Federation vice president Charles Burke says the most important aspect of the policy was the commitment to achieving greater transparency in fresh fruit and vegetable markets. But the agricultural minister, Warren Truss, says a mandatory code would be too much paperwork and the costs too high.
