Howard’s spending spree keeps the bush in mind 29 Sep 2004
The coalition government would spray $40 million at funding more weed reduction and would also beef up Australia's quarantine system if re-elected. Also on the agenda are $20 million for the national livestock identification system; $20 million to stamp out salinity in the Murray Darling Basin and $20 million for water projects in Gippsland's Macalister Irrigation District. The quarantine measures, to be announced soon, will include a $241 million three-year push to maintain border protection and $26 million for boosting local capacity to fight disease outbreaks. There will also be $6 million for a new Centre of Excellence for Quarantine Analysis Research to develop better techniques for import risk assessments, bringing together resources from AQIS, Biosecurity Australia and CSIRO.
