Farm exports slump in August
30 Sep 2004

Australia is finding it harder to sell both farm and manufactured goods overseas. The value of exports fell marginally to $12.9 billion in August to a level below that of three years ago, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported. Rural exports fell 8.9 per cent, ending their recovery since the drought. "It's pretty sad that exports are still very disappointing," said Nick Gruen, chief executive of the consultancy Lateral Economics. Imports also declined in August, by 4.8 per cent. Exports of wheat and other grains fell by 19 per cent in August. Wool exports slumped 21 per cent and meat fell four per cent as farmers continued to restock their herds.
