Producers rebuild sheep flocks
30 Sep 2004

Australia’s sheep producers are expected to withhold adult sheep from slaughter in bid to rebuild flocks over the next year. ABARE has forecast that the sheep flock will increase by four per cent during 2004/05, as producers chase high returns from sheep meat. As a result, Australian sheep slaughter is forecast to fall 11 per cent in 2004/05 to around 9.3 million head. Mutton production is expected to fall seven per cent to 204,000 tonnes, according to Meat and Livestock Australia. Increases in lamb slaughter and production are expected to decrease lamb returns during the 2004/05 financial year.
