Top end mango growers picking Timor labour
13 Oct 2004

Mango growers in the Northern Territory are lobbying for working visas for labour from nearby East Timor. Growers complain the top end misses most of the trail of casual fruit and vegetable pickers who move from harvest to harvest. President of the Northern Territory Mango Association, Geoff Selems, said that "one day we're going to have to get people from overseas, I'm sure. If we do have to go overseas, then East Timor is the obvious place to look." A recent study forecast that production of mangos in the Northern Territory would rise from about 1.8 million trays to as many as 5.5 million trays in 2010.
