Vaile waves a stick at dairy processors 15 Oct 2004
Trade minister Mark Vaile has questioned the prices paid by dairy processors to farmers. Vaile said he found it difficult to understand why processors paid between 20 and 30 cents a litre for milk when export prices, and export capacity, for dairy products continued to rise. “Producers can’t understand why farm-gate prices should be so low when domestic and export prices are where they are,” Mr Vaile said.
Vaile said he had written to Treasurer Peter Costello to press for a Productivity Commission conducting an inquiry into dairy processing.
