Record fine for wetland cleared for wheat 15 Oct 2004
Ron Greentree, one of the nation's biggest wheat farmers, suffered a $450,000 fine for clearing and ploughing significant wetlands on his northern NSW property near Moree. Greentree sowed wheat on about a third of the cleared site. The fine is the biggest penalty yet under a 1999 national environment law. The court fined the farmer $150,000 and fined his company $300,000. Greentree must plant coolibah and other trees and rehabilitate the wetland site.
