Cracked wheat export tow stymies Grain Direct joint venture 18 Oct 2004
CBH Group in Western Australia says that AWB is no longer willing to support a joint venture that CBH believes would make storage and handling cheaper. The joint venture, known as Grain Direct, was due to be up and running by the start of this season’s harvest. CBH expected the plan would save growers around $35 million over the next five years. CBH Group chair Robert Sewell said the joint venture had clearance from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. AWB says it is committed, but also wants some changes to the project. AWB’s stance relates to unresolved controversies over the involvement of CBH in an attempted shipment of 20,000 tonnes of cracked and whole wheat from CBH's terminal at Kwinana last month, in breach of AWB’s export monopoly.
